Laying the Foundation for Total Health

In some ways chiropractic care is a bit like building a house – certain things have to happen in a particular order in order for everything to stand strong and work together properly. When building a house, if you tried to build your walls before you had a solid foundation, your walls would be weak and may eventually collapse. If you tried to build your roof before the walls were ready, you would run into the same problem. These concepts apply to your body as well. If something is not right with your body’s foundation, it needs to be addressed before true health can be achieved. With chiropractic care, your body has to go through a particular process in order to repair itself fully and correctly. There are three general phases of chiropractic care:

Phase 1: Relief Care
The first phase of chiropractic care is centered around the relief of pain and pain-related symptoms. If you are in pain when you first come into our office, our first objective will be to bring your pain levels down so you can start feeling better as soon as possible. It is typical for a patient to need chiropractic care 1-3 times per week during this phase. The amount of care needed will depend on the severity of the complaint and the presence of underlying conditions..

Phase 2: Corrective/Restorative Care
During this phase of chiropractic care, the primary focus switches from pain relief to the restoration of function, although pain reducing measures will continue to be used as needed. The overall goal of corrective or restorative care is to allow the muscles and other tissues to heal more completely, which helps prevent further pain or injury. This increases our chances of getting your body back to 100%. It is typical for a patient in this phase to need chiropractic care about 4-8 times per month depending on their overall health and the severity of the problem.

Phase 3: Wellness Care
Once your body has fully healed and you are no longer experiencing pain or related symptoms, it is still important to continue to come in for periodic chiropractic adjustments and to keep up with your prescribed home exercises and lifestyle alterations. By doing so, you will ensure a more complete form of recovery and reduce your chance of re-injury. Usually, this phase of chiropractic care only requires a quick visit to the chiropractor 1-4 times per month based on your lifestyle and goals.
